A new year has arrived, which naturally means a new batch of swirling rumors regarding the latest Apple product. There are two highly-anticipated Apple products that we have long expected to see in the coming year: the iPhone 5 and the iPad 3. The iPhone 5 has been in the making for well over six months now, as consumers and industry experts have clamored to dissect every Apple announcement and have reacted with disappointment to the fall unveiling of the iPhone 4S. All signs indicate that the iPhone 5 model should hit stores by the summer.

But the iPad 3 is far less a certainty. Although some rumors had anticipated a spring release, and although other commentators had speculated that we would see two new iPads before May, recent reports indicate that Apple may be taking the same route it did last year with the iPhone. In other words, the company may be gearing up for the spring release of an iPad 2S – with the iPad 3 getting pushed back to the fall or to 2013.

iPad 2S: Siri loaded iPad

The reports come from two usually-reputable sources: the Japanese blog Macotakara and Jeremy Horwitz, a writer for Apple’s news site iLounge. Both reports say that the next iPad will be almost identical to the iPad 2 in size, shape, buttons, and layout. In fact, the two products will be indistinguishable from a visual perspective. The only difference will come in the iPad 2S’s width. Horwitz writes that this new product will be about 1mm wider than the iPad 2, a difference that would be imperceptible to most users, but may pose an issue for certain cases that were specifically designed for the second generation model. All other accessories are expected to be compatible.

So if the design is to be nearly identity, what then stands to be different about this possible iPad 2S? Macotakara speculates that it will carry hardware upgrades such as a faster A6 processor and an improved 2048×1536 pixel screen resolution. It may also come with enhanced cameras or with a gadget, such as the iPhone’s Siri, that can differentiate it from the iPad 2.
More over, if we see the way Apple launched iPhone 4S, launching an iPad loaded with SIRI makes more sense to me and I believe a launch of iPad 2S makes more sense to me. After, all SIRI turns out to be a winning bet for Apple.

How much stock can we put in these rumors? It’s impossible to tell. Apple rumors are a dime a dozen these days, and only an official announcement will help us separate out truth from fiction. Fortunately, regardless of whether an iPad 2S or 3 is in the books, we should expect such an announcement at some point in the next few months.
